I was born in a small city in the north-central United States. Growing up, I only knew snow in the winter and moderate temperatures the rest of the year. By moderate, I mean temperatures above bitter cold and what those in the southern states would refer to as chilly. If I traveled out of the state, it would be past the Canadian border. The closest thing to an ocean was the murky lakes we visited for a chilly dip in the summer or to take in the breathtaking fall colors. So why do I feel at peace with my toes firmly embedded in ocean sand?
So far, in my 61 years of life, I have felt truly at peace in only two places in the world – next to the ocean and in the small southwestern town of Santa Fe. The ocean can be anywhere – I have stood on the shores of Bora Bora, the Pacific Ocean, and the Gulf waters. Each has its beauty, majesty, and serenity.
Experts agree the ocean, and for that matter, any body of water where people can gather is therapeutic. Seawater contains minerals that our bodies need like magnesium, sodium, calcium, chloride, and sulfate. Dipping our toes in the water or standing waist-deep and allowing the waves to wash past reduces anxiety. Listening to the sounds of the sea at night induces a better night’s sleep.
When I am near the ocean, my thoughts turn to God, Divine Love, to Source. God is in every drop of ocean water, in every wave that washes over our bodies as we stand in the surf, in every cry of the seagull, in the salt spray that moistens our faces. The ocean reminds us we are like drops of water within the universe, each one unique, each one necessary.
The ocean is alive. Ever wonder why a beach vacation is so relaxing and rejuvenating? Everything in the created universe is made up of pure energy that is constantly vibrating and producing energy. Sometimes life depletes our energy reserves. The ocean, however, possesses an abundance of positive energy. When we allow the waves to wash over our bodies, the ocean will pull negative energy away and raise the vibrational energy of mind, body, and spirit. We feel rejuvenated, replenished, and restored. God, Divine Love, is pure positive energy. Sinking our toes into the soft, wet sand and letting the waves wash over us connects us with Divine Love, with the Source of life, to heal and restore…..
