Bridging the Divided

A Win-Win…..

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.” – John Grogan

There aren’t many positive things I can say about life during COVID except now I get to stay home with my dogs every day. Don’t get me wrong, it was great to come home from work every day and be greeted with such joyous abandon, but I prefer the occasional time away and the vast majority of my time spent with our dogs. No one, not even the humans in our lives, are as happy to see us when we return home even if we are returning from a walk to the mailbox.

I am not a people person, never really have been. I prefer the company of a few close friends, family, and my dogs. Human relationships are difficult, complicated, and time consuming. People sap my energy. Animals, and particularly dogs, do not. Time with animals energizes me.

Think about the times you have left for work irritated or frustrated with a spouse or child. It ruins your day, doesn’t it? Maybe it is work, or work relationships that are difficult. Just thinking about going to work depletes energy reserves and increases stress levels. Having a pet waiting at the door when we get home is a plus – they are glad to see us when a spouse or child may still be smoldering and likely waiting to reignite the disagreement. When we return from a day at work, we may feel frazzled, worn out, depleted, but our pets are there waiting with wagging tails and happy barks, and we feel better, energized. And what do pets do all day? Not much, mostly they wait until they hear the key in the lock and see us walk through the door. The simple act of their humans walking through the door sets their worlds right. Do we realize how much time our pets wait for that moment and how much joy it gives them?

I’m glad I work remotely now, and I know our dogs are glad to have me home more than I am away. These days I am much more centered and less stressed. I absorb positive energy from our dogs. It’s a win-win…..
