Bridging the Divided

Wisdom Is The Domain Of The Golden Years…..

In a little under two weeks, I will turn 60 years old. The reality is setting in. I’m not over-the-moon about it, but what is the alternative?

Birthdays, especially the milestone ones, tend to result in a life review; an analysis of where we are, where we wanted to be, and where we missed the mark. The chasm between where I am and where I wanted to be is massive, the other side so distant I need the Hubble telescope to catch a glimpse. No use in crying over spilled milk, as they say, so onward and upward, deal with the reality.

Aging is an interesting journey. Intellectually we know we are growing older, minute by minute, day by day, then one day we become acutely aware that more life is behind than is ahead. When did life happen? Wasn’t it seconds ago I was a child, a teen, a young woman, wife, and mother? Today, my once blonde mane is gray, albeit a gorgeous shade, and I earned every silver strand, my face has a few laugh lines, and my body, well, it’s functioning, thankfully. Except for the recently broken ankle when I thought running through the backyard while wearing wedge sandals in pursuit of one of our dogs was a good idea.

Wisdom is the domain of the golden years, or so it is thought. Oscar Wilde said, “with age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone.” True statement, that. Wisdom is gained through surviving the tough times, learning from mistakes and missteps, and applying the wisdom gained as we move forward. Like knowing better than to run after a dog in wedge sandals kind of wisdom.

In just under two weeks I will plunge into my sixth decade of life the same as I do everything, I will suck it up and stumble through it. I think I will wear flats, however…..
