Bridging the Divided

The Mindset Of A Dog…..

“A dog will teach you unconditional love. If you can have that in your life, things won’t be too bad.” Robert Wagner

Maybe that is why some believe dog is God spelled backward. Maybe God wanted us to experience Divine Love in a tangible way. Dogs are the closest representation of Divine Love we will ever have while we hang out on planet Earth.

The characteristics we value most in dogs are unconditional love, loyalty, forgiveness, trust, and mercy, wouldn’t you agree? Dogs love without expecting anything in return, without limits. They are loyal until the very end, forgive when we screw up, trust us with their lives, and extend mercy to even the most abusive owners. Isn’t that a lot like God? And yet the Bible doesn’t say many good things about dogs. Kind of antithetical, isn’t it?

People struggle with unconditional love, too often we erect boundaries and set limits on our ability to love others. As long as people fit into our neat little boxes, we love them unconditionally, but that isn’t unconditional love, is it? To love others unconditionally we must see beyond their faults, flaws, and foibles, extend mercy and forgive when we believe ourselves the victim, hard tasks for many. And yet, the furry creatures that capture our hearts love unconditionally, choosing to see the essence of our beings, the part of us that is Divine Love, instead of focusing on all the things we say and do that, at times, make us more difficult to love.

There is a Hindi greeting of respect that reminds me of the mindset of our canine friends; namaste. Namaste means the Divine in me recognizes and bows to the Divine in you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had the mindset of a dog…..
