Bridging the Divided

Thankful For The Scars…..

When our bodies hurt, we look for ways to relieve the pain. We seek the help of a doctor or alternative medicine provider, pain-relieving medications, and the like. But when we are in emotional pain, the tendency is to ignore it, avoid the feelings, or dive into ways of relieving it that are detrimental to our health and wellness. Dealing with emotional pain helps us grow, but we are reluctant to journey with pain to garner growth.

Music speaks to us in ways conversation does not. The words of a song touch the deepest, darkest corners of our spirits and shine light into the darkness. The Christian radio station I frequently listen to plays a song entitled Scars, by the group I Am They. The song’s opening lines begin with the view from the other side of pain:

“Waking up to a new sunrise

Looking back from the other side

I can see now with open eyes

Darkest water and deepest pain

I wouldn’t trade it for anything

Cause my brokenness brought me to You

And these wounds are a story You’ll use”

I don’t identify as a Christian. I believe in the spirit of Divine Love, the origin and essence of every breath, and all life. Divine Love uses our brokenness to bring us to the end of ourselves, to help us see beyond the pain, and heal the wounds of life. As we heal we are able to use our story to reach out to others in pain as they walk their journey of healing.

“Now I’m standing in confidence

With the strength of Your faithfulness

And I’m not who I was before

No, I don’t have to fear anymore”

Emerging from the darkness and walking into the light our confidence is renewed. We have faced the enemy and risen from the ashes to live another day.

“So I’m thankful for the scars

‘Cause without them I wouldn’t know Your heart

And I know they’ll always tell of who You are

So forever I am thankful for the scars”

As the shadow of pain dissipates, we experience gratitude for reaching the other side, and realize we are thankful for the scars. The scars bear witness to triumph over pain. The scars tell a story, our story, the story of finding light in the darkness, healing from the pain, and discovering we are not alone, as we are extensions of Divine Love. The scars are part of who we are, bearing witness to our strength, courage, and perseverance…..
